Restore Employment and Education Rights for Adults and Children with ADHD

Are you a working adult who has ADHD? Are you a student concerned about receiving appropriate accommodations at your college or university? Does your child attend a private school that does not receive federal financial assistance?

If the answer is yes, then the Americans with Disabilities Restoration Act is crucial legislation for you to know about. The original Americans with Disabilities Act became law in 1990 and is the major civil rights law for people with disabilities. Since then the courts have significantly narrowed the reach of the law and made it very difficult for a person with any cognitive or mental disability to be protected.

The ADA Restoration Act, now before Congress, will restore the original intent of the law and protect all people with disabilities. This is particularly important in protecting the rights of persons with disabilities in employment and students in private schools, colleges and universities.

`The first rule of warfare is: Kill your enemy'

As any ADHDer can tell you, it is the moment that counts. What comes next or before is over the horizon. This is particularly true in a sound-bite, bitterly partisan era in which it is possible to say ''cut and run'' and think (or pretend) you have actually said something. It's easy enough to say that America's leaders suffer from ADHD, but on the basis of all this, it's apparent that so do we all. We always forget to hold them accountable.

Pass the Ritalin, please.

Racial and Ethnic Disparity Seen in Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Diagnoses

Hispanic and non-Hispanic blacks in the United States have slightly higher rates of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms compared to their non-Hispanic white peers, according to an analysis by U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials.

These higher rates of symptoms among black and Hispanic children exist even as diagnosis rates for these groups lag those of whites.

The differences in diagnosis between racial and ethnic groups have been well established, and the work of the CDC team, presented here at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition, shows that the lack of diagnosis in minority communities does not reflect a lower burden from ADHD symptoms.

AD/HD Awareness Day Senate Briefing Postponed

It is with a heavy heart that ADDA, CHADD and the NMHA have made the decision to cancel the AD/HD Awareness Day briefing scheduled for September 14, 2005. The lives of millions in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast have been irrevocably changed as a result of Hurricane Katrina and our nation and government are appropriately focused on coping with its devastating impact. We feel it would be both insensitive and inappropriate to distract our legislators and their staff members from that effort at this time.

Citigate raises awareness about Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

Citigate SA (Johannesburg) has launched an awareness campaign about Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and the support available to sufferers as part of its social responsibility programme.

The campaign is centred around the Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Support Group of Southern Africa (ADHASA) which was started in the late eighties with the aim of creating awareness about ADD.

Many people have not yet heard of the support group, nor do they understand the condition or know how to handle this hidden handicap.

Therefore Citigate, a corporate communications company, decided to create awareness about the support group and the condition among the community and the media.

Discover and understand unmet needs in the ADHD market

The current global ADHD market is worth $2.7billion and is expected to reach $3.3billion by 2015, driven primarily by the launch of pipeline drugs and the continued growth of Strattera.

Innovation is key - manufacturers can no longer expect significant returns on standard extended release formulations. The current pipeline offers drugs with novel delivery mechanisms; improved durations of action and anti-abuse profiles, which will help differentiate these pipeline drugs from the current established ADHD therapies.

Although ADHD drugs have demonstrated significant efficacy in improving the three main symptoms of ADHD - inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity - none have shown efficacy in treating the cognitive deficits of ADHD.

National Attention Deficit Disorder Awareness Day

The Attention Deficit Disorder Association (ADDA)
is pleased to announce the second annual “National Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Awareness Day”, to be held on September 14, 2005. Awareness Day is a widely celebrated, high-profile media event observed annually by millions of Americans with AD/HD. The event goes a long way towards getting information about the disorder out to the public-at-large in an effort to counter the stigma, myths and misinformation surrounding AD/HD and to enable people to get the help they need to overcome their challenges.

Americans first celebrated National AD/HD Awareness Day in 2004 following ADDA’s successful efforts to spearhead passage of a US Senate Resolution that recognized AD/HD as a major public health concern. ADDA is currently in the process of working with members of the Senate in an effort to get the resolution passed again this year. Individuals are encouraged to regularly check the Awareness Day link on the ADDA website at www.add.org. A notice will be posted on the website in the event ADDA needs to call upon members of the public to assist them in their efforts by contacting their Senators and voicing their support for the resolution
