People show their true colors in chat rooms

I was bored and thought I would find a productive way to spend my time. I heard there were attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and parenting chat rooms on Yahoo. What a great idea! Maybe I could offer information to those in need — and for free. This is, after all, what I teach. (I am often that naive.)

I went through 17 parenting rooms, two ADHD rooms and all the depression support rooms. In each room I posted a single statement of greeting and an offer to help answer questions. I used a tag that identified me as a child psychology professor. In each room I waited for five minutes to see what happened.

What I saw was sexual talk about anatomy size and shape, pornographic conversation, needless gender and racial hatred and all around cruelty. (And oddly enough, a lot of talk of chocolate. Go figure.) One person did ask a genuine question, but my response was over-run by mean-spirited and pointless remarks. Several even showed open hostility to me for ruining their fun (I presume by talking about child problems in an ADHD room). That was it — in every room was the same result.

Your pills are calling you

The Boston Globe

Now imagine that your pill bottles were smart enough to ring your cellphone and say, ''Hey bonehead, you forgot me!"

Acton-based Clinical Technology Advisors (clintechadvisors.com) is offering a solution for absent-minded outpatients, the SIMpill bottle. It could prove a lifesaver for epileptics, organ transplant recipients, and those suffering from bipolar disorder.

The SIMpill, which costs about a buck a day to use, could also prod your curmudgeonly pops to comply with his cholesterol-lowering drug regimen, or tattle on your teen if he is avoiding his ADHD meds

Harnessing the power of podcast technology to help those with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

"Abby", a high-tech worker in Seattle, has a secret. She has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, better known by the initials ADD or ADHD. Symptoms include the inability to maintain attention, impulsive behaviors and/or motor restlessness. AD/HD, if left untreated, can result in difficulty with personal relationships, staying employed, or completing an education.

"I haven't told a lot of people about my ADD because once you let the cat out of the bag, you can't put it back in," she said. "It's a problem I deal with every day. Most of the time, I can manage it. But I have to keep alert on how this disorder affects me. I do that through my podcast."

A podcast is a web blog (blog) that you can hear. It contains episodes of audio content collected together in a show. Anyone can click on the link and the computer's media player will play the sound file (mp3). Or people can listen from anywhere when they download the sound files onto a portable mp3 player like an iPod. Hence the name, podcast.
